Wilkie Way: Early Numeracy Games- Set 4 5+ (Maori) GAWW16

Maori version of Set 4 These games focus on the knowledge of 5+. Using this knowledge is a key skill in the emergence of mathematical thinking strategies, an alternative to counting for solving problems and therefore essential knowledge. Games included: *Keep Smiling- The game requires a dice marked 5,6,7,8,9,10. The result is on the dice, what was the problem to give the result? *Wilkie Five Way- The game requires two dice, one marked 5,5,5,5,5,5 and the other marked 0,1,2,3,4,5. Joining two sets, a result unknown type problem. *Climb the 5+ Tree- The game requires a dice marked 0,1,2,3,4,5. Joining two sets, a result unknown type problem. Some children may still need to count the 5 but others will be counting on from 5. *Rockets Away- The game requires a 1 - 6 dice. Given the start number of 5 and the result, what needs to be added on? A change unknown type problem. *Busy Bee- The game requires a dice marked 5,6,7,8,9,10. As in game 1, the result is on the dice, what was the problem to give that result, using mathematical symbols rather than words. Social Skills All the games are designed to be played with a partner, learning to take turns. Problem Solving Skills These games provide children with the opportunity to not only find the answer, result unknown type problems, but also provide the opportunity for change unknown and start unknown type problems. Oral Language Games have a specific theme. Discussion around the themes should include opportunities to build vocabulary in addition to building mathematical vocabulary as children are encouraged to verbalise their thinking as they play.
