Maori version of Set 3 These games require the children to use their knowledge of the counting sequence to find the number after and the number before a given number in the range 1 - 10. Children are recognising numbers up to 10 (11 and 12 in game 5 only). Children are also required to use their knowledge of joining two sets to find how many altogether. Games included: *Playing In Order- Sequencing numbers 1 - 10 (could also be played backwards) For numbers less than 3 use one dice. use 2 dice for all other combinations to give practice in basic facts. *What Comes After?- Learning the number that comes immediately after a given number. encourage children to verbalise e.g. 6 is after 5 or after 5 comes 6. *What Comes Before- Learning the number that comes immediately before a given number. Encourage the children to verbalise, e.g. 2 is before 3 or before 3 comes 2. *Pop The Balloons- Joining two sets to find the total, numbers up to 10. Some children will be counting all the spots. Encourage memorisation of doubles and plus one. *Three In A Row- Joining two sets to find a total. Some children will be counting all the spots. Encourage memorisation of doubles and plus one. Use logic and reasoning to win the game. Social Skills The first four games can be played individually or with a partner learning to take turns. Game five required play with at least one other person. Problem Solving Skills In all games children should be encouraged to communicate their mathematical thinking through verbalisation using their increasing range of mathematical language. game 5 involves using prediction, trial and error, making choices and decisions and logic and reasoning strategies. Oral Language Games 1, 2 and 3 have specific themes, 1. Children's games, 2. The Learning Environment, 3. The kitchen. Discussion around the themes should include opportunities for vocabulary building.
