First Steps in Mathematics: Measurement

First Steps in Mathematics is the result of extensice research into primary students' learning of mathematics. It aims to improve the mathematics outcomes of students and develop teacher's understanding of teaching and learning within a developmental framework. First Steps in Mathematics was developed by the Department of Education and Training in Western Australia. The texts and professional developemtn program support a strategic whole-school approach to improving students' mathematics outcomes. First Steps in Mathematics is organised around sets of outcomes for Number, Measurement, Space, and Chance and Data. Each resource book focuses on one of these sets of outcomes. The resource book include sample learning activities, sample lessons and "did you know?" sections. These sections highlight common understandings and misunderstandings that students might have. Each First Steps in Mathematics resource book has two unique features: -The Key Understandings provide the 'big mathematical ideas' that students need to know in order to achieve the mathematical outcomes. -The Diagnostic Maps give clear descriptions of charateristic phrases in the development of students' thinking about the major concepts in each set of outcomes. This series is designed to enhance teachers' professional judgements. It will enable teachers to diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate their students' learning experience.
