Quick Overview

The You Can Spell series has been a popular resource in New Zealand schools since the early 1990s.
These are now a printed on demand title, and may take up to 3 weeks to supply, if not in stock.

The You Can Spell series has been a popular resource in New Zealand schools since the early 1990s. It has now been revised, with new activities, new lists (including, for example, 'digital') and a bright new presentation but it is still based on original research, a mastery learning programme and the 3700 most frequently used words in English (the words that make up more than 95% of all writing).

Book 1
You Can Spell Book 1 will help children learn to spell 100 of the most commonly used words in the English language the words that make up about half of everything written.

Book 2
You Can Spell Book 2 follows on from the first book in the series and introduces children to the spelling of another two hundred of the most commonly used words in English. Once again, interesting activities and puzzles make the learning process fun, and help children to understand how to spell.

Book 3 and Book 4
You Can Spell Books 3 and 4 (second edition) continue laying the foundations for learning to spell by taking a childs spelling competence to over 1000 of the most commonly used words in the English language. Books 3 and 4 are structured into weekly learning lists with a procedure that requires the children to spell only the words that they need to learn. The books contain activities that reinforce learning and humorous characters to guide the children along the way.

Book 5
You Can Spell Book 5 continues the emphasis on the skills required to remember and retain spelling while introducing new vocabulary activities suggested by the Exploring Language requirement of English in the New Zealand Curriculum. Vocabulary lists have been revised, incorporating new words which, in only a decade, have become virtually obsolete. A humorous cast of characters encourages the children to enjoy the process of spelling mastery. Book 5 takes a students spelling competence to 1600 words.

Book 6
You Can Spell Book 6 continues the emphasis on the skills required to remember and retain spelling while introducing new vocabulary activities suggested by the Exploring Language requirement of English in the New Zealand Curriculum. Vocabulary lists have been revised, incorporating new words which, in only a decade, have become virtually obsolete. A humorous cast of characters encourages the children to enjoy the process of spelling mastery. Book 6 takes a students spelling competence to 2300 words.

Book 7
You Can Spell Book 7 continues the emphasis on the skills required to remember and retain spelling while introducing new vocabulary activities suggested by the Exploring Language requirement of English in the New Zealand Curriculum. Vocabulary lists have been revised, incorporating new words which, in only a decade, have become virtually obsolete. A humorous cast of characters encourages the children to enjoy the process of spelling mastery.

Book 8
You Can Spell Book 8 continues the emphasis on the skills required for spelling mastery while introducing words that even adults have difficulty spelling correctly, together with more advanced vocabulary activities. The vocabulary lists have been revised to incorporate new words that have entered the everyday vocabulary of New Zealanders and remove those words which, in only a decade, have become virtually obsolete. A humorous cast of characters encourages the children to enjoy the process of remembering and retaining spelling. Book 8 takes a students spelling competence to 3700 words and prepares the student to learn to spell the subject-specific vocabulary found in Now You Can Spell.

Now You Can Spell
Now You Can Spell is a unique spelling book, designed for learners who must cope with the specialised vocabulary they meet in subjects beyond English. Peter De Ath has drawn on several decades of teaching experience to produce 35 lists, totalling 700 words, that sum up concepts encountered in science, mathematics, the arts and humanities at Levels 4 and 5 of the New Zealand Curriculum Framework. Learning to use and spell these words accurately is an important skill for intermediate and secondary school pupils. The interesting and creative exercises and lively illustrations in Now You Can Spell make this learning a pleasant experience.

My Word Book
This Word Book contains the 300 most frequently used words in English. These words make up two-thirds of everything written, and all young children need to be able to spell them to produce good written work. The book also has space for a child's own important spelling words to be taken in. And to help young writers {and their parents and teachers), guidance in the most commonly used handwriting style is given on every page.

Books 1-4 Teacher's Guide
This Teacher's Guide for Books 1 to 4 of the You Can Spell series is an indispensable and practical aid to teachers in achieving the initial goal of the programme - providing children with a sound technique for learning to spell, and for mastering the spelling of the 1110 high-frequency words in the 90 lists that make up Books 1 to 4.

Books 5-8 Teacher's Guide
This Teacher's Guide for Books 5 to 8 of the You Can Spell series is an indispensable and practical aid to teachers in achieving the initial goal of the programme - providing children with a sound technique for learning to spell, and for mastering the spelling of the 1110 high-frequency words in the 90 lists that make up Books 1 to 4. (For the new editions of the pupils' books, the lists have been updated to include technical, electronic, metric and commonly used Maori words, and the activities have been thoroughly revised.)
